How does roaming work on Lebara prepaid plans?
If you’re a UK resident with a Lebara prepaid SIM, you can travel in the EU without having to purchase additional bundles. Lebara’s Roam Like Home rules mean you can use your plan’s data, calls, and texts in eligible destinations, subject to fair-use rules.
Lebara offers roaming add-ons for selected countries outside the roaming zone. You can also use pay-as-you-go (PAYG) credit, but be aware that costs can add up quickly, especially if you use a lot of mobile data.
A Saily eSIM can be a cheaper alternative. You can install an eSIM alongside your existing Lebara SIM and use it for mobile data abroad, helping you avoid Lebara roaming charges while keeping your regular SIM in your phone.
Lebara roaming countries: A full list
Lebara keeps roaming relatively simple by splitting the world into three pricing models. First is Roam Like Home, which lets you use your existing UK plan allowance (calls, texts, and data) in eligible European destinations and India at no extra cost. Second are roaming add-ons — prepaid bundles that give you a fixed amount of data, minutes, and texts for a set number of days. These are generally the cheaper option outside the Roam Like Home zone. Third is pay-as-you-go (PAYG), where you’re charged per MB, minute, or text if you roam without an add-on — convenient for occasional use, but usually more expensive.
Lebara roaming in EU and India
If you’re a UK-based Lebara customer, you can use your plan’s minutes, texts, and data across the EU (plus a handful of nearby countries) and India without paying extra. You just need to activate your SIM in the UK before you travel.
You can use your normal data allowance abroad up to a maximum of 30 GB per month. If you burn through your 30 GB or want extra data beyond your plan, check Lebara’s roaming rate finder for current add-on pricing.

A few countries you’d expect to be covered actually aren’t. Switzerland sits outside the EU and EEA, so it’s excluded. The Vatican, Andorra, Monaco, and the Balkan states (Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia) are also outside Lebara’s current Roam Like Home list, along with Turkey. If you’re visiting any of these, you’ll need an add-on or a travel eSIM instead.
If you’re traveling across several countries, you can also consider an eSIM for Europe instead of relying on your UK plan. You can also learn more about how EU roaming works and why roaming rules can differ between networks and destinations.

International roaming countries (add-ons or PAYG)
Outside Lebara’s Roam Like Home destinations, your regular UK allowance won’t apply. Instead, you can buy a roaming add-on or use PAYG credit. If an add-on is available for your destination, you’ll usually find it works out cheaper than paying Lebara’s roaming rates as you go.
Roaming add-ons are available for many popular destinations around the world, including:
Pricing is different depending on the country, so it’s worth checking Lebara’s rate finder for the exact cost before you go.
Lebara also sells a separate travel eSIM covering 190+ countries worldwide, with local data rates instead of roaming fees. For readers who aren’t sure what that actually means, our guide to what an eSIM is explains how it works.
A third-party travel eSIM can also be worth comparing with Lebara’s options. For example, if you’re heading to the US, you can compare USA roaming costs with an eSIM for the United States. Our guide to international roaming covers the different ways to stay connected in other destinations.

Lebara roaming charges and add-ons explained
Lebara’s roaming costs depend on where you’re going and how much data, calling time, and texting you need for your trip. Add-ons are sold in eight-day and 15-day blocks, each with a fixed allowance of data, minutes, and texts. If you run out of your allowance, you can either buy another add-on or fall back to standard PAYG rates, which charge separately per MB, minute, and text.
Here’s how Lebara’s pricing looks for a few popular destinations:
Destination
| 8-day add-on | 15-day add-on |
|---|
Australia
| £4: 1 GB, 10 mins, 10 texts | £12: 3 GB, 30 mins, 30 texts |

Canada
| £5: 4 GB, 30 mins, 30 texts | £10: 7 GB, 50 mins, 50 texts |

China | £4: 1 GB, 10 mins, 10 texts
| £12: 3 GB, 30 mins, 30 texts |

Japan | £12: 1 GB, 10 mins, 10 texts
| £25: 3 GB, 30 mins, 30 texts |

How to activate Lebara roaming
Lebara states that your SIM must be activated in the UK before you travel. After that, you’ll just need to ensure you have your data roaming switched on so you can access mobile data. That applies whether you’re using Roam Like Home or a roaming add-on that you’ve purchased.
To do that:
Open your phone’s settings.
Go to “Mobile data,” “Cellular,” or “Mobile network” (the name depends on your device).
Select your Lebara SIM if you use more than one SIM.
Switch “Data roaming” on.
If you’re using pay-as-you-go (PAYG), make sure you have enough credit on your account to cover your usage. You’ll be charged Lebara’s standard roaming rates for whatever country you’re in.
If your mobile data isn’t working, it’s worth checking your APN settings. Lebara lists its APN as uk.lebara.mobi, with “WAP” as both the username and password. Saily’s guide to what an APN is covers steps on how to find and configure APN settings on your phone.
If you’d rather avoid having to use roaming at all, we also have a guide to using your phone overseas without roaming charges that covers the alternatives.
Lebara prepaid SIM, Lebara travel eSIM, or Saily
Using your Lebara prepaid SIM makes perfect sense if you’re sticking within the Roam Like Home boundaries. If not, a travel eSIM could be a better option. Here’s how Lebara mobile roaming stacks up against travel eSIM plans from Lebara and Saily.

If you already have (or want) a UK number and mostly travel in the EU and India, a Lebara prepaid SIM should be enough. You can use your Lebara mobile roaming at no extra cost in any Roam Like Home zones and grab an add-on for brief stops elsewhere. If you’re traveling more widely, a travel eSIM is usually the better choice. eSIMs are easy to install (no messing with physical SIM cards) and tend to work out cheaper than international roaming.
Saily offers country and regional plans as well as a global eSIM, so you can choose coverage to suit any type of trip, from a single-destination vacation to a multi-country journey. It also comes with extra security features, including a virtual location, an ad blocker, and web protection. You can read Saily reviews to find out what travelers are saying about it.
If you’re unsure whether an eSIM makes sense for your device or trip at all, Saily’s explanation of eSIM vs. a physical SIM card covers the differences.
