Does the iPhone 15 have a SIM card? eSIM and SIM slot explained

Does the iPhone 15 have a SIM card? Yes and no, depending on where you bought it. US models have ditched the physical SIM card entirely in favor of eSIM technology, while most international versions still have a SIM card slot. In this blog post, we’ll cover which iPhone 15 models support physical SIM cards, how an eSIM works, and what you need to know before traveling abroad.

Does the iPhone 15 have a SIM card? eSIM and SIM slot explained

Does the iPhone 15 have a SIM card slot?

US iPhone 15 models don’t have a physical SIM card slot and work exclusively with eSIM, while models sold in the UK, EU, and most other countries have both a nano-SIM tray and eSIM support. There’s one important exception: iPhone 15 models sold in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao use two physical nano-SIM cards and don’t support eSIM technology, meaning you can’t install a travel eSIM on these devices.

On iPhone 15 models with a physical SIM slot, the nano-SIM tray is located on the left side, just below the volume buttons. Meanwhile, models that support eSIM technology can store eight or more eSIM profiles and keep two active at the same time.

This makes traveling particularly convenient. You can add an eSIM for internet access abroad while keeping your regular number active for calls and texts. You can also check the full list of iPhones that support eSIM to see how other models compare.

Does the iPhone 15 Pro Max have a SIM card?

US iPhone 15 Pro Max models don’t have a physical SIM card slot and rely entirely on eSIM, while those sold in the UK, EU, and most other regions support both a nano-SIM and eSIM. The same applies to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Plus, so it’s where you bought your phone, rather than which model you own, that matters.

To check your iPhone, look for a physical SIM card tray on the left edge, below the volume buttons. If there isn’t one, your iPhone 15 is eSIM-only. You can also go to “Settings” > “General” > “About” to check your model number and identify which regional version you have. For more details, see the full list of eSIM-compatible devices.

Older models are a little different. For example, if you’re wondering, “Does the iPhone 11 have a SIM card?”, the answer is yes, it comes with a physical SIM tray regardless of where it was bought.

How to change a SIM card on the iPhone 15

To change the SIM card on your iPhone 15, start by turning your phone off. Find the SIM tray on the left side of the phone, then insert a SIM ejector tool (or a small paperclip) into the pinhole and press gently until the tray pops out. Remove the old SIM card, place the new one into the tray with the gold contacts facing down, and slide the tray back in. Turn your iPhone back on, and it should connect to your network within a few moments.

Keep in mind that iPhone 15 models sold in the US do not have a SIM tray at all and work with eSIM only. If you have a US model, check out our iPhone 15 eSIM guide for how to set that up instead.

Is it better to use an eSIM or a SIM card when traveling?

An eSIM is generally better for travel because you can install it in minutes without visiting a store, while a physical SIM may be more practical for longer stays, especially if you want a local contract or cheaper in-country top-ups.

The biggest advantage of an eSIM is convenience. You can buy and activate a data plan before leaving home, switch between plans in your phone’s settings, and avoid dealing with tiny SIM cards that are surprisingly easy to lose. An eSIM also lets you keep your home number active for calls and text messages while using a separate travel plan for mobile data.

Check the table below to see how the two compare.

Tips for planning your iPhone 15 travel setup

A little preparation before your trip can save you from expensive roaming charges or arriving in a new country without internet access.

We’ve prepared a quick checklist of five things worth checking before you fly:

  1. Check your iPhone’s compatibility. Make sure your iPhone 15 supports eSIM technology and isn’t carrier-locked. If you’re comparing options, take a look at international data plans for travelers before choosing one.

  2. Update your iOS. Install the latest iOS version and set up your travel eSIM while you still have a reliable Wi-Fi connection.

  3. Label your mobile plans. Name your lines “Home” and “Travel” in your iPhone settings so you can easily tell which one you’re using for calls, texts, and mobile data.

  4. Turn off data roaming on your home line. Set your travel eSIM as the default for cellular data and disable data roaming on your regular line to help avoid unexpected charges.

  5. Keep your home line active. If you need to receive verification texts or two-factor authentication (2FA) codes from your bank or other services, leave your home SIM or eSIM enabled. Check with your carrier about potential charges for calls and texts abroad.

For iPhone 15 travelers, Saily offers data plans in 200+ destinations, with installation handled entirely through the app — no QR codes or physical SIM cards required.

Saily includes extra security features, such as a virtual location for changing your apparent browsing location, an ad blocker to reduce unwanted ads, and web protection to help block malicious websites while you’re browsing abroad.
